Many of my friends and family will recognize this picture of this wonderful man. But for those of you who don't, this is Gordon B. Hinckley who is the 15th President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, which is the church that I belong to. Last Sunday, he passed away quietly in his apartment with his family at his side, at the ripe old age of 97. Church leaders said that he was in is office working hard, up until a few days before he passed away.
I guess news travels fast in our church, because 1 hour after he passed away, I got the news from my brother (and we were in Hawaii at the time!) At first, I really surprised myself, I didn't have much reaction to the news. I just felt happy that he would now be with is dear sweet wife, Marjorie. My mother was able to attend his viewing and his funeral. My mom said that he even had a little smile on his face. As I imagined him lying in his casket, with his smile on his face, it finally sank in. Later that evening, I broke down and cried, not so much out of sadness... but more out of the love I felt for him and the profound impact that this marvelous man truly had on my life.
President Hinckley led by example, and truly inspired others as he led his life full of self-less love towards others. He emanated sincere gratitude, a firm testimony of Jesus Christ, love for those of all nation, religion, and ethnicity. Most say that he always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. His countenance radiated a sense of true happiness that was contagious. All the way up until his death, he had a resounding energy, clear faculties, and a charming witt! He never stopped working or serving others until the very end of his life.
During his time as President, some estimate he gave over 2000 speeches and traveled half-million miles as he met and served with church members as well as others not of our faith, and dedicated chapels and temples throughout the world. Before he became president, there were 47 operating temples. Now we have 124, and 14 more that have been announced and under construction.
I can see why President Hinckley went out with a smile on his face. He lived a very humble life. He was never concerned with money, possessions, or popularity. But his life was filled with that which matters most. He taught matters most is usually intangible, but of an eternal nature, such as spending time with family and serving others. The love, service, and testimony that he has shared, will impact generations upon generations to come.
His example has effected my life tremendously. I have often felt an overwhelming and powerful spiritual feeling when I listen to him speak, and it has touched my life greatly. I hope to live with the same fiery determination, love, and humility that he has shown. If I do that, I'm sure I'll be able to go out with a smile on my face as well!

It is so true! When I think of his passing, I am overcome with joy that he can be with his wife and loved ones that have passed before, and yet an overwheming of all the things that he was able to accomplish.
